Dustless DUST CONTROL

Dustless® - Why It Works & How It Works

The least expensive dust control method is Dustless®. One needs to know the capabilities and

functionality of the product to be properly informed.

Dustless® does not function like water or chlorides:

Water surrounds individual soil and/ or dust particles, thus “floating” the individual particle. When a

particle is floated by application of water, there is a space in between each soil particle (a space filled

with a microscopic amount of water). If enough water is applied to eliminate all dust, then every soil

particle is separated by water. This separation reduces friction because the particles no longer touch the

adjacent particle directly. This phenomenon commences immediately upon reaching optimum moisture

content (OMC) in the soil. Once you exceed OMC even by a very small percentage, you have mud. If you

do not reach OMC, then you do not have complete dust control. Wetted soil sticks to wheels and

equipment etc., it tracks, it has low coefficient of friction, and it immediately begins to dry out (all bad

things). This procedure, using water as dust control, provides a very short effective life span and needs

continuous re-applications to create at best, modest dust control that is constantly changing in

effectiveness.

Chlorides work by drawing moisture out of the air thus dampening the soil. Same problem as water, not

enough chlorides and you do not have complete dust control. Too much chloride and you have hard and

soft spots in the soil, some area over treaded and some areas undertreated. Any amount of chloride and

you have corrosion of vehicles and equipment, you have health issue of breathing in dried, chloride soils

the control goes away. Chlorides require several applications per year. Chloride applications are only

effective if there is substantial moisture/humidity in the air. A heavy rain event washes away chlorid

dust control requiring reapplication. Continual use of salts (chlorides) over extended periods of time,

kills adjacent vegetation, and pollutes ground water.

Dustless® works differently. It is specially formulated to absorb into the individual soil particles rather

than surround and “float” the particles as does water. By absorbing in and not surrounding the particle,

the individual particles remain in direct contact with each other keeping the soil surface firm, good

coefficient of friction (traction), no stickiness, thus no tracking. The product is not alkaline, is not acidic,

it is not-corrosive and non-hazardous. Effective dust control lasts for about one year. Watering is never

required. Climate or humidity are not factors. It does not wash away or dilute in rain events.

Reapplications after the initial application are done at a much lower rate to renew highly effective, long

lasting control.

Dustless® application is more cost effective, more effective, and is always better from a health point of

view. All of this with no negative environmental issues and no corroded equipment

Dustless® Lifespan Expectations

The lifespan of a Dustless® application is dependent upon substantial variations. These variations are
due to the type of soil/aggregate that makes up the road, amount of traffic shear, depth of dust, amount
of dust that blows in from untreated areas, etc. (recommend DirtGlue® polymer application to soft
shoulders and embankments immediately adjacent to the Dustless® treated roadway to minimize
contamination of treated roadway surfaces).
Most dirt roads are hard packed base from long term use with a layer of dust on the surface created by
tire slippage (shear), scuffing and wearing away at the surface of the hard-packed base.
A brief discussion of each issue:
1.
Aggregate mad from softer rock break up from traffic faster than harder rock, therefore more dust
sooner. Soils with high clay content tend to absorb much of the Dustless®, especially the first
application, thus shortening the life span of the application or requiring higher initial application rate to
make up for the high initial absorbance.
2.
Rubber tire traffic that just rolls over a straight, level surface makes very low shear. Traffic that must
accelerate or decelerate due to hilly terrain creates much more shear due to tire slippage during
acceleration and deceleration. Traffic turning, stopping, backing, etc. create large amounts of shear.
More shear equals more dust which means shorter treatment life or higher application rates.
3.
The deeper the dust layer the more Dustless® that will be required for adequate treatment.
4.
The vacuum or draft from passing traffic may pull dust from the soft shoulder along the side of the road
and this dust settles out on the treated driving surface of the roadway contaminating the application
and prematurely overwhelming the Dustless® treatment. A light application of DirtGlue® polymer to the
sides of the roadway can mitigate this problem.
5.
Sometimes high winds can blow dust from a substantial distance onto the treated road surface thus
prematurely overwhelming the treatment.
Dustless® is typically used in high traffic or heavy traffic areas as a solution for extreme dust.
It soaks into the individual soil/dust particles making them too heavy to move this eliminating dust. It
does not form a crust and never evaporates thereby being unaffected by traffic. Because it never
evaporates it lasts for a very long time 9 – 15 months’ dust control with one application. As long as the
treated soil is still in place if retreatment becomes desirable it can be done at a substantially lower rate.
Application is very simple (anything that will apply water would apply Dustless®) and there is no
equipment clean up necessary.

There is no question that a dirt road that is regularly watered has a higher cost than a n annual or even
semiannual treatment of Dustless® just because of the expense of the truck, the driver, the
maintenance, and the fuel.
